Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing aka EMDR is an evidence-based, highly effective modality for creating tangible, lasting change.
It's not necessarily a quick process, however.
In order for the reprocessing stage of EMDR to be most effective, i.e., for the nervous system to truly feel safe in present day, the preparation stages that precede reprocessing must occur.
Specifically, we are looking not just at having a full picture of "what happened to you," but we are looking at resourcing.
Resourcing includes EMDR protocols (specific strategies to provide support and relief that are established in session) as well as the complementary aspects of your life that contribute to an overall felt sense of safety.
These can include:
- social supports
- creative outlets
- physical movement
- complementary and alternative medicine such as acupuncture, reiki, and bodywork
- nutrition
- overall stress management
These are all supportive strategies, and can contribute to moving through reprocessing more smoothly.
